Emergency services are attending numerous flooding-related incidents in the Ellesmere Port area this afternoon (Friday, June 10) with school children sent home early.
Police and fire crews received several reports of flooding in the town centre but also the Little and Great Sutton areas following a sudden downpour.
There are no reports of any injuries.
Cheshire Police tweeted the following general warning about 2pm: “Heavy rain in the Ellesmere Port area causing some localised flooding and surface water on roads. Please drive with care in the area.”
Then at about 2.30pm police reported that a sinkhole had appeared in Glencoe Road, Great Sutton, leading to road closures although it later transpired there had only been damage to the road surface.
A householder in Glencoe Road had also been worried about rising water levels in their back yard.
Sutton Green Primary School in Armthorpe Drive has countered rumours that a roof has collapsed but says storm water has backed up through toilets leading to a large number of rooms being flooded. Children have been sent home early.
It is not yet known whether the school will be able to reopen on Monday.
There are also closures in place in Green Lane and Gleneagles Road.
Police tweeted: ‘Considerable flooding in the area, though water is subsiding. Avoid if possible.”
Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service reported on its website that heavy rain had caused flooding in shops in Chester Road, Little Sutton.
Eight properties were involved with water around one foot deep, covering electrical sockets. Firefighters assisted colleagues from Cheshire West and Chester Council.
There was also flooding on the roadway in Kronsbec Avenue, Little Sutton, where an occupier had feared the water was about to enter their house.
Spokeswoman Sarah Dornford-May said crews had been called to Ashfield Road North in Ellesmere Port where flood water had entered a property but the level was subsiding with no action required.
A car had got stuck in flood waters in Green Lane, Great Sutton. An officer had attended but their assistance was not necessary by the time they arrived. There had also been flooding reported in Harewood Avenue, also in Great Sutton.
