Footage has emerged of a ‘creepy clown’ visiting locations across Ellesmere Port in an apparent attempt to scare members of the public.

A prankster in a clown mask has been filmed lurking around parts of the town, copying the bizarre and sinister craze which emerged in America but is now taking hold in the UK.

A number of short videos posted on YouTube show the ‘Ellesmere Port clowns’ outside the town's Asda store, the Thomas Telford Wetherspoon pub, playing on the swings at a local park, visiting the bus and train station and visiting Joseph Groome Towers.

In one of the clips, the clown asks viewers ‘do you live here? I’m coming to find you’ before bursting into a evil laugh.

In another video at the town’s train station, the clown asks ‘who wants to get on the train with me?’, before letting out another evil cackle.

Cheshire Police has been inundated with sightings of ‘killer clowns’ across the county during the past week.

It was also reported a group of young boys were ‘chased’ by a clown in Ellesmere Port earlier this week.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: “We are aware of the current trend in America of people dressing up as clowns, which has reached the UK and received some publicity in the media.

“We have a received a number of reports relating to this phenomenon, here in Cheshire, and we’re also aware of rumours that are circulating on social media.

“While we appreciate Halloween is just a short time away, scaring people – especially children and vulnerable people – in this way is completely unacceptable and could constitute an offence.

“Anyone who sees any suspicious activity should call Cheshire police immediately on 101.”

Meanwhile, a Christleton resident called The Chronicle to report seeing an incident on Wednesday evening (October 12) in the village, involving a failed attempt by a 'creepy clown' to scare an elderly couple.

The caller, who did not wish to be named, said: "I was coming back from the village shop at about 7pm when I noticed a boy of about 12 on a bike wearing a clown mask. It was one of the scary versions and he had his hood up.

"As an elderly couple approached him, he growled at them and tried to make them jump. But the woman just said 'is that supposed to scare me?' and carried on walking."

The incident was not reported to the police.
