IT IS expected to be a hard fought contest between Ellesmere Port and Neston Conservative and Labour candidates Stuart Penketh and Andrew Miller.

Both candidates predicted it would be a very close battle for votes with even Andrew Miller expecting that his comfortable 6,607 vote majority that he notched up in 2005 may not be enough to hold off his Tory opponent.

Mr Miller's election agent Sue Pugh is quietly confident after a month long campaign and believes that whatever constituents political convictions believes that "everyone in Ellesmere Port and Neston recognises how hard Andrew has worked for his constituency for 18 years."

She said: "We are very happy with today it has gone well. It has been a well organised campaign a lot of people have come out in support and we have had a good reception.

Justin Madders, Cheshire West and Chester Labour councillor and former Ellesmere Port and Neston borough council leader, is expecting a close fought battle between Andrew Miller and Conservative candidate Stuart Penketh, although he's predicting Miller to win overall by 2,000 seats.

A spokesman for the Conservative group believes that Stuart Penketh has run a very positive campaign and are confident that we do well tonight.

She said: "Stuart has run a very positive campaign and has worked very hard, people have been telling us that want change from Gordon Brown."

Former Tory candidate for Ellesmere Port and Neston in 2005 Cllr Myles Hogg said: "It is going to be much closer then mine, we need a large swing. I think we will come close tonight we will see!"

Mike Shipman agent for Denise Aspinall Lib Dem candidate believes the Nick Clegg Factor has helped her campaign.

He said: "The Clegg factor has certainly worked for us. A lof of people from areas in the constituency, that we haven't even canvassed have emailed us and phoned Denise offering their support and wanting to know more about the party. The response has been very good and we hope to have a good result tonight."
