A RUNCORN engineering firm is showing its support for a new bridge by displaying the Mersey Gateway logo on all its vehicles.

Picow Electrical Engineering Group, based in Lowlands Road, backs the campaign for a new crossing.

The company was established 27 years ago and employs more than 100 staff.

It also sponsors Widnes Vikings and its director, David Allen, played for the club for seven years from 1973.

He said: 'The company has come on leaps and bounds over the years and it's nice to put something back into the community.'

Mr Allen believes the new bridge is vital but accepts that drivers will have to be charged a toll.

'Tolling would be a great idea,' he said. 'I use the M6 toll road every week and it is the only way forward.'

Cllr Rob Polhill, Halton's executive board member for development, planning and transport, said he was delighted by Picow's support.

He said: 'It is really pleasing that a company with its origins in Halton has done really well locally and nationally but still has its roots firmly in the borough.

'We are delighted they have taken this initiative and are working alongside the council on the new crossing.'
