FAMILIES are being offered support at a £500,000 children's centre in Crewe.

The new facility at Newcastle Street is the first of its kind in South Cheshire and will offer parents in the West End a range of services supported through the Government agency Sure Start.

Underwood West Children's Centre will serve nearly 900 families in St Grosvenor and St Barnabas ward, which have recognised problems with social and financial hardship.

After taking three years to complete, families were invited to see the centre officially unveiled.

Children's Centre coordinator Wendy Whittaker said: 'Parents and carers can drop in anytime between 9am and 4pm when they will receive a warm welcome and discover all that is going on here.'

The centre will offer a range of information and advice sessions with input from midwives, health visitors and speech and language therapists.

There are also plans to build two further centre at Monks Coppenhall Primary School and Pebble Brook Primary School.
