A pair of Chester hotels have been named in the Sunday Times 100 best in the UK.

Edgar House in the city centre and Park Fields in Christleton have been acclaimed in the Ultimate 100 British Hotels list.

On its brief, the Sunday Times said: "Comfort, service and value are essential, but to be included, a hotel also needs to have qualities that are less tangible — personality and warmth. And these do."

A romantic retreat in the heart of Chester, it is the latest in a string of accolades for Edgar House.

The boutique hotel by The Groves was praised for its caring service and inviting interior.

The Sunday Times said: “Owners Tim Mills and Mike Stephen picked a stunning location for their city-centre refuge: a handsome Georgian villa gazing down from the city walls towards the River Dee.

“Then they poured heart and soul into the project.

“Giant bespoke beds, copper baths, statement wallpapers, gold-leaf mosaics - there are winning flourishes in every room.

“Tell them about an allergy or intolerance and you’ll get your own specially printed menu at breakfast.”

Edgar House was named the second most romantic hotel in the UK in February.

It has also been topped TripAdvisor’s rankings for small hotels and been picked out as one of the best places in the country for a winter break.

Park Fields only opened its doors in the spring of 2016, but it has made a quick impression.

The Times said: "A symphony of greys, creams and silver.

"Rooms have marble shower wet rooms, crisp white linen, wi-fi and flat screen TVs.

"You can round off a perfect day with a private viewing in the home cinema, or unwind in the hot tub on the terrace."

The boutique bed and breakfast has been established in a country house in Christleton by husband and wife Simon and Jo Kent.

Jo said: "We are absolutely delighted with this recognition from such an independent and prestigious source.
