CALLS will be made to dump a waste recycling scheme which has outraged many residents, who are fed up with rubbish only being collected every other week.

At next week's full council meeting Vale Royal Borough Council will be asked to abandon its Kerbside Recycling Scheme, which means household waste is picked up every two weeks, with recyclables such as paper and tin collected in between.

The opposition Labour Group will hand in two petitions to the borough council's ruling Conservative and Lib-Dem leadership and demand that a 'more flexible' policy is accepted on collecting rubbish.

Labour Group leader Brian Lloyd said his postbag was bulging with complaints about the change in waste collection.

'We have got to the end of the first six months that this scheme has been running for,' he said.

'At the full council meeting on July 29 there will be two petitions handed in to the council against the biweekly waste collection.

'In view of the high level of complaints about waste collection, we will be asking that a more flexible policy is introduced.

'This scheme is not working and people are not happy about household waste only being collected every other week, so it really needs looking at again.' Cllr Lloyd is calling on members of the public who are angry with the waste collection policy to lobby their ward councillors.

He said: 'If the public have concerns, they should take the opportunity to write to their own councillors so that they are aware of the views of the people they represent.'

Cllr Lloyd's views have been backed by scores of residents who have written and called the Chronicle to complain about the scheme.

Elaine Gibson said her disabled mother Cynthia, of Brock Street, Winnington, is constantly being missed off the waste collection.

'They were brilliant before this new system was brought in,' she said.

'They are supposed to come in my mother's yard to pick up her rubbish, but she has missed out twice now. We are all in favour of recycling, but this is not working.'

The borough council insists its scheme is working well for the majority of residents, but accepts there has been some teething problems with certain homes. Anyone experiencing difficulties is advised to contact the helpline on 0800 435199. The council meeting takes place at Wyvern House in Winsford on Thursday, July 29, at 6.30pm.
