The Duke of Westminster’s son, the Earl Grosvenor, attended Prince George’s Christening this afternoon (Wednesday) after being chosen as one of the royal baby’s seven godparents.

The Earl, otherwise known as Hugh Grosvenor, who grew up on the Eaton estate near Chester, attended the christening at St James's Palace in London where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were joined by close friends and family.

The Archbishop of Canterbury conducted the service in the presence of The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Harry.

Hugh’s father, the Duke of Westminster, is a good friend of Prince Charles and there are close links between the families.

The Duchess of Westminster is herself godmother to Prince William, as Princess Diana was godmother to the Duke and Duchess’ daughter Lady Edwina.

Following the announcement by Kensington Palace that Earl Grosvenor has been chosen as one of the Godparents to Prince George, Hugh said: “ I am deeply honoured and delighted to have been asked to be a Godparent to Prince George.”

Other godparents include family friend William van Cutsem, whose brother Edward married the Grosvenors’ eldest daughter Lady Tamara at Chester Cathedral in 2004 at a ceremony attended by Princes William and Harry, The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh.

Prince William’s cousin Zara Tindall is the only member of the royal family to be godparent and Kate's old school friend Emilia Jardine-Paterson was also asked to take on the role.

Godparent Julia Samuel was a close friend of Prince William’s mother Diana, Princess of Wales, and is a trustee of charity Child Bereavement UK, which the prince has supported.

The other godparents are the couple's university friend Oliver Baker and William and Harry's Private Secretary Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton.
