Police have issued a warning about dangerous drugs after four young revellers ended up in hospital when they took pills in a city centre nightclub linked to serious illness and even death elsewhere in the country.

The males, all aged 19 and from the Frodsham area, purchased what are believed to be ecstasy tablets while in Rosies nightclub, Northgate Street, Chester, which led to police and paramedics being called at 1.45am today (Saturday, March 14).

After taking the tablets all four became unwell and were taken by ambulance to the Countess of Chester Hospital where they received medical attention but were released after several hours.

Police say the tablets believed to have caused them to be ill were described as being red and yellow in colour, featuring the letters ‘UPS’. Similarly described tablets have been linked to severe illness and even death elsewhere in the country.

Enquiries by Chester police, supported by the nightclub, resulted in a 19-year-old male being arrested on suspicion of possession of drugs with intent to supply. He is currently assisting police with their enquiries.

Police are appealing for anyone who was at the nightclub last night, and who may have any information which could assist police enquiries, to make contact.

Detective Inspector Simon Newell said: “Police are also advising that anyone who has taken a tablet similar to those described, and who is feeling unwell in any way, should immediately seek medical attention by attending their local A and E. I would also advise everyone to be a good friend – if you believe someone you know may have taken one of these tablets, then check on them this morning and make sure they are well. If there is any doubt, seek immediate medical attention. “

Chester police will be maintaining a high profile presence in Chester city centre during the course of this afternoon and evening (Saturday, March 14).

Information can be offered to Chester police by dialing the non-emergency number 101, quoting incident number 90 of 14/03/2015. Information can also be left anonymously on the Crimestoppers hotline 0800 555 111.
