MOTORISTS in Ellesmere Port are being urged to step up their car security.

Bobbies are concerned at the number of car break-in and theft reports they are receiving and are encouraging motorists to think security first in a bid to drive down the offences.

PC Frank Morris, a Community Action Team officer, said: 'Vehicle crime is constantly being reported to the police.

'The east side of the Port seems to be worst affected in areas such as Stanlow, Wolverham, Whitby, Central and Westminster.

'In policing terms, it's difficult to target this problem because the offences are being committed at random times and locations.

'Most of it is down to the opportunist thief and there are ways to avoid becoming a victim.

'Good security acts as a deterrent. This slows the thief down and forces the use of tools, which are hard to conceal. Some measures don't take too long to put into place but they may help to deter the opportunist thief.

'If you care about your car, make sure you follow basic crime prevention measures to keep your car secure. Taking just one step could prevent your car from being stolen.'

Motorists are advised to:

Close the windows and sunroof;

Lock all the doors and the boot;

Use an approved steering lock or gear clamp;

Set the immobiliser and alarm if they are fitted. If not, consider having them fitted - this can also reduce insurance premiums; and

Always take the keys out of the ignition, even if a car is left unattended for a matter of seconds.

PC Morris added: 'Never leave vehicle documents in your car - don't make it easy for a thief to sell your car or provide a cover story if stopped by the police.'
