THIS was the scene after a bus driver rammed a double-decker bus under a narrow pedestrian bridge, costing him his job.

The Chester-based driver has been forced to quit after he ploughed his bus into the Brook-vale bridge in Runcorn, ripping the roof off.

There were no passengers on board the Cheshire First bus on Saturday, when the newly qualified driver went off-route and ignored two vital road signs as he approached the busway near Palacefields Avenue.

The accident happened despite Halton Borough Council's attempts to make the height restriction signs more visible.

The company has refused to disclose details of the driver's identity, but decided to alter his contract after admitting it was a dangerous manoeuvre that could have put lives at risk.

Traffic police sealed off the road to make the area safe at about 12.10pm.

A spokesman for First said: 'The driver had been out of service and off his given route when this incident took place.

'That particular driver had all the right training and he was expected to drive within that area. On this occasion, he proceeded to take a different route and had ignored the height restriction signs.

'A decision has been made that the driver will no longer be working for us as the company takes such safety issues very seriously.'
