A NORTHWICH bus driver has been hailed a Bus Idol!

Dave Barrass scooped the 2005 Bus Driver Idol title bestowed by Arriva North West and Wales.

Dave, who works around Mid Cheshire from Arriva's Winsford Industrial Estate garages, was nominated by customers who called a special competition hotline last month.

He was nominated for his helpful nature and for being very popular amongst locals - 'they all love him' said one. He was also praised for helping wheelchair users and prams on and off his bus.

Dave, who lives in Wincham with wife Valerie, said: 'I was overwhelmed when I heard that I had been chosen as the winner of the Arriva Bus Driver Idol. I would like to thank all the customers who called in and nominated me.'

Dave, who has been a bus driver for six years said: 'I enjoy it. I like meeting members of the public and I like to get them smiling - if they come on to my bus smiling then it's an easy journey. I help them with their shopping and on and off the bus and I think that's what they nominated me for.'

Dave, who is 62, received a trophy, bottle of champagne and a cheque for £100.

Nick Gordon, marketing manager of Arriva, said: 'We're very pleased to make Dave our Bus Idol for 2005 but we mustn't forget all of the other drivers who were nominated. We were staggered, not only by the number of calls we received but also by the complimentary comments given. We will be individually recognising each of the drivers who were nominated.'
