Traffic lights at the Fountains roundabout in Chester are not working following a New Year’s Eve collision.

Police arrested the driver of a four-by-four vehicle after he crashed into a traffic light at the busy junction about 10pm, causing it to topple over.

The 31-year-old male, from Ellesmere Port, was charged on New Year’s Day morning with failing to provide a specimen of breath for analysis and driving without due care and attention.

The traffic light on the St Oswald's Way approach was pole-axed and the other traffic lights were switched off for safety reasons so the junction is now operating as a normal roundabout.

However, a contractor working for Cheshire West and Chester Council highways department expects to carry out repairs tomorrow (Friday).
