POLICE brought a World Cup-themed clampdown on drink-driving to Mid Cheshire this week with the message, 'Kick it out'.

Football fans were invited to ask themselves, 'Think! Will you make it to the final?' at Mid-Cheshire College's Hartford campus on Wednesday with a penalty shoot-out using 'beer goggles' - glasses which disorientate the wearer and simulate the effects of drinking.

Peter Gordon, of Cheshire County Council's Road Safety Unit, said: 'We were delighted to be joined by Witton Albion's goalkeeper Brett Walker. He had quite an easy day, as the glasses really do disorientate the penalty takers, just as drink does when it comes to driving.'

The event was organised by the Local Authority Road Safety Officers' Association North West and supported by Cheshire police. LARSOA chairman Steve Whitehouse said: 'We will all cheer England on in the World Cup, but our advice is, if you are going to drink, leave your car at home. You cannot calculate your own drink-drive limit and the only safe option is not to drink and drive.'
