THIEVES uprooted a bed of geraniums that were donated to an award-winning station garden run by volunteers.

A dozen geranium plants, given to North Cheshire Rail Users Group by Vale Royal Borough Council, were taken from the gardens at Frodsham Station.

Volunteer Janet Briggs, of Frodsham, and her husband Philip, tend the platform’s gardens, which have been named best kept gardens for five years running.

She said: “It looks as though about 12 have been taken and put in someone’s car boot right on the car park. It’s not the sort of petty crime we get with teenagers, they just pull them out and make a mess.

“We are given these plants and somebody has decided to take some of them. It’s annoying because it is someone who can likely afford to buy the plants.”

Janet, who has been volunteering at the station for about 20 years, added: “We have no idea who it is. I suspect it is someone who parks in the station though.

“This is the second time it has happened, it was the same last year. People tend to blame young people but this is certainly not a young person’s crime.”

Helsby parish councillor Frank Thomas, a volunteer at Helsby Station, said: “Frodsham Station is given about 1,000 and we get about 500. Some of the flowers outside in the car park were taken. It’s a strange one.”

In April, Janet was awarded a prize at Arriva Trains Wales’ annual area adopters conference.

The pensioner reports incidents of anti-social behaviour and vandalism at the station to the police.
