CHESTER music fans have a lot to look forward to this week with concerts from Finzi Friends and Chester Music Society.

The former was set up to promote the work of the English composer Gerald Finzi and on Saturday, November 5, Jo Patton, clarinettist with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, will lead some promising young clarinettists through Finzi’s Five Bagatelles for clarinet and piano at 4pm at Wesley Methodist Church in St John Street in Chester.

The talented young players include Katie Pownall from The King’s School and Rob Brazier from The Grange School.

An evening concert at 7.30pm by the chamber choir of Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester will be conducted by Martin Bussey.

The choir will be joined by the young tenor and former St Paul’s Cathedral chorister Thomas Kelly, from Manchester University, who will sing songs by Finzi and Benjamin Britten.

Next Wednesday, November 9 Chester Music Society present a celebrity concert at St Mary’s Centre with flautist Laura Lucas and pianist Daniel Swain at 7:30pm.

Laura studied at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester and was principal flute in The National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. She was the youngest winner of the Shell/LSO Scholarship in 2001.

The programme includes works by Telemann, Prokofiev, Debussy, Brahms and Poulenc.
