Motorists are advised that work begins at one of Northwich ’s busiest roundabout on Monday (February 15, 2016) as part of a multi-million pound upgrade.

Improvements are taking place at the A559 Chester Way/Leicester Street junction with disruption inevitable in a major scheme that won’t be completed until September.

Cheshire West and Chester Council says this next step is necessary to ensure the town can cope with the extra traffic generated by new developments.

Cllr Brian Clarke , cabinet member for economic development and infrastructure, said: “The improvements to Chester Way/Leicester Street roundabout are essential to significantly improve traffic flow, so the town can cope with the extra traffic generated by new retail and leisure developments such as Barons Quay , Memorial Court and the Lion Salt Works .

“They will also ensure that pedestrians and cyclists can continue to navigate these roads safely. We will continue to work with traders and residents to minimise any disruption, and will be keeping them informed as the scheme progresses.”

Funding worth £3.4m

Financed with £3.4m Government ‘pinch point’ funding, the scheme will increase the size of the roundabout to cope with future levels of traffic and provide much-needed pedestrian crossing facilities.

Traffic signals will be installed to improve safety for all users of the roundabout and additional parking will be provided nearby to support local businesses.

The council and its contractors will work with traders to reduce the impact of the scheme and minimise disruption to local businesses and residents.

During construction, access will be maintained to businesses and residents. However, to carry out the works safely, diversion routes will be in operation at certain times.
