A youth representative of a city church has raised cash for a charity close to her heart.
Jessyca Baker, the young persons’ representative for St Thomas of Canterbury Church in the Garden Quarter, raised £821 for Diabetes UK.
Jess said: “The reason I decided to fundraise for Diabetes UK was because my dad Jim was diagnosed with the condition three years ago.
“It was a shock to the entire family, as he was so fit and enjoyed a healthy lifestyle.
“It occurred to me that I didn’t really understand what diabetes was and the difference between Type 1 and Type 2. I wanted to raise awareness of this condition and make it more accessible to others to understand the impact on a day to day basis of someone living with Type 1 diabetes.”
During her studies at Manchester Metropolitan University, Jess made a short film focusing on the condition that she used to enhance her fundraising.
Events that Jess organised included a fireworks night, cake bakes and a tombola.
Jess added: “I enjoyed the experience thoroughly and saw it as a way of giving back to a charity that will stay with my dad and our family for the rest of our lives.”
