Rail passengers travelling from Chester to Liverpool are facing severe disruption today, after freezing weather conditions suspended normal services.

Merseyrail services ground to a halt early this morning, after ice was discovered on the conductor rails, which has prevented trains from gainig power.

The Chester to Ellesmere Port line has been disrupted and all services from Chester are currently suspended between Chester and Birkenhead Central.

Limited replacement bus services to Birkenhead and Ellesmere Port have been made available.

But it has caused huge disruption to passengers, including Kerri Lytton from Chester, who was travelling to work in Liverpool with her young daughter who she had planned to leave with her childminder.

She said: "I've had to come home and tell work I can't get in for my shift.  My little girl was freezing, and an hour and half bus ride with her isn't exactly the best situation, and we would have had all that to do on the way back, it was just not fair to her."

A spokesperson for Merseyrail told The Chronicle that every effort is being made to rectify the problem, but normal service is not expected to be resumed until 1.15pm at the earliest.

"The service is quite poor at the moment as a result of the ice on the tracks, and we sincerely apologise for the disruption across the network.

A limited rail replacement bus service is available and as well as this, Stagecoach will also be accepting Merseyrail tickets.

"Every measure is in place to resolve this issue."
