DEDICATED fundraisers managed a mammoth challenge of their own on the day of the London marathon with a sponsored walk from Connah’s Quay to Chester and back.

The friends are raising funds for the Anya Bentham Appeal.

Two-year-old Anya, of Waverton, Chester, is being treated at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool for an advanced form of an aggressive cancer called neuroblastoma.

An appeal to raise £250,000 to pay for her to have pioneering treatment in America, which is not available on the NHS, has been set up and has already raised more than £80,000.

The walkers trekked along the river path from the Rock in Connah’s Quay to Chester Racecourse before a few of the hardy souls turned around and walked back.

Leah Hughes, 28, of Bryn Road, Connah’s Quay, who organised the event, said she was thrilled with the momentum behind the appeal.

She said: “We just have to keep plugging away.

“People keep turning up and joining in once events are planned.

“I think today we should raise in excess of £2,000. Everyone has been really kind and I’d like to thank everyone for taking part.

“It was a pleasant walk and not too strenuous and at least the rain that was forecast stayed mostly away.”
