POLICE are treating as suspicious the death of a Crewe man who plunged from a window at a block of flats.
Stephen Fowles, 36, was found lying on a pathway in a pool of blood beneath his second floor window at Brookfield Court off Walker Street after falling more than 30ft.
Police rushed to the scene at 11.20pm on Saturday after a passerby raised the alarm, calling 999 on his mobile phone.
Mr Fowles, an unemployed man, was taken to Leighton Hospital but pronounced dead on arrival.
A post-mortem examination revealed he died from head injuries.
A man and a woman, both from Crewe, were later arrested and released on police bail.
Barbara Jones, who works at the Castaways shop in nearby West Street, had spoken to Mr Fowles shortly before he died.
She said: 'He shopped here quite regularly and was always very chatty and friendly. I was upset to hear what had happened to him.'
Police forensic teams searched the flat where Mr Fowles was believed to have lived alone.
Neighbours were shocked to hear of the incident which happened less than a month after a man was stabbed in the adjacent block of flats, Alexandra Place.
Dave Yeoman, landlord of the nearby White Lion pub, said: 'I heard some commotion outside and thought it was probably serious when I saw four police cars and two ambulances at the flats across the road.'
West End resident Robert Madeley, 61, of Gorse Street, said: 'I've lived in this area for 35 years and it has never been so bad. Nothing surprises us anymore.'
An 88-year-old woman living in nearby Grosvenor Court sheltered housing block said: 'These flats are supposed to be sheltered but I hear people running past my door at night. Sometimes they rattle my letterbox. It's very frightening.'
A Cheshire police spokesman said: 'A 36-year-old man and 33-year-old woman from Crewe were arrested in connection with the incident at 12.50am on Sunday.
'They were later released on police bail pending further enquiries. They will return to Crewe Police Station on January 11.'
Police are appealing for anyone who was in the vicinity of Brookfield Court and Walker Street on Saturday between 11pm and midnight to contact Crewe CID on 01244 350000.
