AN inquest has been opened and adjourned after a Run-corn man died while preparing the central barrier of the M6 for repairs.

The inquiry into the death of 41-year-old Stephen Coulter, of Spennymoor, follows a road accident which took place on Tuesday, May 10.

Mr Coulter was working a night shift on a coned-off section of the motorway between Junctions 19 and 20, when he was struck down by an oncoming silver Honda Civic.

The impact of the collision also killed his work colleague Raymond Schofield, 48, of Sandy Lane in Warrington, and a 31-year-old woman driver from Preston.

A spokeswoman for the motorway construction group Amey, and its partner Mouchel Parkman, announced an internal investigation has been launched and the relevant authorities consulted.

She said: 'Both groups extend their sympathies to the families of the relatives involved.'

The family is too distraught to comment but is considering preparing a formal, written statement to be issued later this week.
