POLICE have launched a witness appeal after a car smash on the border of Widnes and Warrington which left a passenger with fatal injuries.
Officers cordoned off Farnworth Road from Barrows Green Lane, Widnes, to Cuerdley Road, Warrington, while accident investigators worked at the scene on Monday.
The incident involved two cars, one a black Renault Clio driven by an 18-year-old man from Warrington, while the other car, a silver Citroen Saxo, was carrying three people, including a male front seat passenger who was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.
The other passenger, a 17-year-old girl sitting in the back of the car, suffered only minor injuries, along with the 20-year-old driver. The occupants of both vehicles were from the Warrington area.
Police said the Citroen had been in collision with a lamp-post and came to rest in a field. They believe both cars were heading in the direction of Warrington.
Firefighters used cutting gear to remove the Saxo's roof to free the trapped occupants.
Police are calling for witnesses to the incident which happened on Farnworth Road close to South Lane at 12.45am on Monday.
