A SHOWDOWN meeting is planned over the Ince Marsh Incinerator, which campaigners believe could turn Cheshire into a 'dumping ground' - and fill the Northwich air with toxins.

At the County Hall meeting on Monday, county councillors want to hear the views of developers Peel Holdings and opposing campaign groups fighting the Ince Resource Recovery Park proposals before making a recommendation.

Peel Holdings says the park, which would be situated in Helsby, would be a regional centre creating 1,100 jobs and help to meet government targets by reducing landfill.

It would reprocess materials but a 100m-high stack would burn 600,000 tonnes a year of Refuse Derived Fuel to create 95MW of electricity.

Northwich-based Cheshire Anti-Incinerator Network (CHAIN), along with parish and district councils and representatives from local primary care trusts will be invited to give a presentation.

CHAIN secretary Jonathon Guy, of The Crescent, said: 'We object to the proposal because it is totally against the fundamentals of waste management.

'Large-scale plans like Ince Marsh which completely ignore that principal and would turn Cheshire into a dumping ground - the dirty man of the North West.
