A TALENTED young poet has had his work showcased in the British Library.

Guilden Sutton Primary School pupil Louis Mullineux, of Sefton Road, Hoole, triumphed in the national Young Writers’ My First Riddle Competition with his very first poem, entitled Football.

Louis, a keen Manchester United supporter, said: “It took me about half an hour to write it at home with my mummy.

“There’s lots of things to do and describe in football, so I decided to write about that.”

Being one of only a handful of winners in the competition, run by Forward Press, Louis is now the proud owner of a special certificate and will be published in a book, My First Riddle - England

Louis, who plays for Waverton under-sevens football team, says he is also ‘excited and happy’ that people will be able to read his poem while it’s on display at the British Library.

He said: “I felt like I’m famous, it has been on the radio and newspapers.”

Forward Press established Young Writers in 1991, to help produce poetry lesson plans and other free resources for teachers. A spokesperson said: “Young Writers has always encouraged the reading, writing and enjoyment of poetry and creative writing.

“Along the way we hope we’ve helped poetry shake off its boring, old-fashioned image and displayed it in a new light.”
