POLICE have warned this weekend’s Creamfields dance festival will test the area’s traffic infrastructure to its limit.

Thousands of people will flock to Daresbury from across the UK in what is expected to be the event’s biggest ever turnout.

A detailed traffic management plan has been drawn up by Cheshire police after talks with Creamfields, the Highways Agency and neighbouring local authorities.

It aims to ensure festival-goers enter and exit the site efficiently and by appropriate routes – many of the 800-strong Creamfields policing team will be involved in its implementation.

Cheshire Police says road restrictions and use of designated car parks will be “rigorously enforced”.

Since Monday, electronic motorway signs on the M62 and M56 have told motorists to expect delays.

But police have issued assurances that access to homes and businesses will be maintained, despite multiple road closures.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time for journeys and to listen to radio congestion alerts.

Inspector Debbie Dodd, who heads the Creamfields police planning team, said: “The traffic management plan addresses the fact extra people will be travelling into the area, the likelihood of any congestion on local roads and what plans are in place if there is a major incident on any roads.

“We’ve also consulted with various agencies and everyone is happy with the plans.

“We would like to remind drivers they must only use designated car parks and must not attempt to park elsewhere.

“There will be a large number of people coming into the area and this will test the traffic infrastructure to its limits.

“But we are confident the plan in place addresses any potential issues.”
