A DRIVER who narrowly escaped death in an accident on a notorious stretch of road is calling for a crackdown on speeding motorists.

Rosita Weller, 49, was driving along on the A54 at

6.35am on Friday, January 28, when a car pulled out in front of her at the crossroads near the Fishpool Inn, Delamere, the main road from Winsford to Chester.

She swerved to avoid the vehicle, veering off the road and crashing into a tree. She suffered multiple injuries including a broken neck, collar bone, shoulder, hand, fingers, kneecap and ankle. Mrs Weller, who had been on her way to work on Winsford Industrial Estate, had to be cut free from the mangled wreck of her blue Cherokee jeep.

She has made a miraculous recovery, taking her first steps last week, and plans to focus on improving safety measures at the accident blackspot.

She said: 'I am one very lucky lady but it could have been so different. I'm still recovering and when I feel fit enough I will be campaigning strongly for speed restrictions to be put in place. It's a nasty, dangerous piece of road and something needs to be done. It's clear it's a problem area.'

A Cheshire County Council spokesman said: 'Speed restrictions are in place on the A54 at appropriate intervals in accordance with the Highways Code. Incidents of motorists exceeding the speed limit are a matter for the police.'

Alan Earl, who lives in Winsford and heads an action group campaigning for better road safety on the A54, said: 'I would like to wish Mrs Weller luck in her campaign. Anyone fighting for improved safety on the A54 has our support.'

Mrs Weller added: 'I thought I was dead and I owe my life to Bill Telford, who was on his way to work when he saw me, stopped and looked after me until the ambulance arrived.

'I would like to thank the emergency services for what they did to get me out of the car and to the hospital, and to staff at Leighton.'
