A GREAT-GREAT-GRANDAD and grandma are celebrating their 60 wedding anniversary this month.

Norman Clutton, 83, and his wife Beryl, 78, of Springfield Avenue, Malpas, were married at Malpas Church on August 19, 1948.

Retired bricklayer Norman said: “We knew each other from eight years old, we actually lived on the same road in Malpas. I was at number 13 and Beryl was at 21.

“I went away into the Air Force at 17 for about four years while Beryl was working at a bakery in Malpas.

“I was walking up the road and she was leaning on the door and said ‘hello love’, and that was it. They were two very fateful words she spoke. That was in the March of 1947 and we got married in the August of 1948.”

The couple have lived in Malpas for 57 years and have raised their family there.

Norman added: “We have four children, two sons and two daughters. We sadly lost one of our sons two years ago aged 55. We also have 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grand-children and two great-great-grand-children.”

Asked what the secret to a long and successful marriage is, Norman said: “I don’t know really, I suppose it is being prepared to give more than take. We have always worked together.”

The couple will be celebrating with their family.
