The Countess of Wessex has visited the Cheshire County Show today (Tuesday, June 23).

The Countess, who is president of the show, saw Cheshire West and Chester Council win a coveted gold award in the trade stand category.

Lord Mayor of Chester, Hugo Deynem, said: “It is a great honour to be presented with the gold award and I must thank all our staff for their hard work which has led to this wonderful accolade.

“We are proud to once again be a principal partner of the Cheshire County Show. The theme for this year was health and wellbeing with plenty of opportunities for visitors to get involved and learn more.”

The council stand, which was visited by the Countess, features only edible planting such as fruit trees, a large vertical wall planted with a variety of herbs, vegetables and other plants used to flavour foods. All planting is bee and butterfly friendly.

Large park signs and a show leaflet give information and ideas on how to incorporate health and wellbeing into people’s lives.

The stand also profiles the work of the Streetscene team in relation to the attractive planting and countryside events programme delivered by Streetscene.

Visitors to the stand can enjoy the planting and the activities and chat to members of the marketing, public health and Streetscene teams.

Family friendly events on the stand include visitors using newspapers to make a paper pot which they can fill with compost and plant a sunflower seed, a tomato plant plug or a pepper plant plug. There are also plant markers that can be decorated to go in the plant pot.
