CONCERNS over homophobic bullying have been raised by Cheshire West and Chester Council.

Cllr Richard Lowe (Con, City) raised the issue in a question to portfolio holder Cllr Arthur Harada (Con, Overleigh).

Cllr Lowe pointed out he had asked about the council adopting an “education champions programme” drawn up by equality and justice body Stonewall “so schools in Cheshire West and Chester can identify and understand the issues around homophobic bullying."

He asked Cllr Harada if he could provide an update.

“The issue is one the local authority's anti-bullying group has been considering," said Cllr Harada in a written response.

“The Stonewall materials have been considered by the group but it is for individual schools to decide what materials are used to tackle this important issue.

“In addition, the council's equality and diversity group has carried out a consultation with representatives of Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual groups, including young people specifically.

“One outcome of this work has been for a member of the equality and diversity team to receive Stonewall training in order to champion this important issue."
