VEHICLE tax dodgers in Northwich are having their cars clamped - and could face having them crushed unless they pay up.
During the first half hour of the two-day initiative launched by the Neighbourhood Policing Unit yesterday, seven cars were clamped in one small area alone.
Sgt Andy Smith said the crackdown followed an upsurge in complaints from members of the public about tax dodgers.
'There has been an increase in the number of calls we receive from the public about the number of untaxed vehicles on the road and we wanted to reassure people that we were tackling their concerns.
'Vehicles targeted included those we had been informed about and also those spotted by our foot patrols. A number of people have already paid up as a result.'
Vehicles spotted without an up-to-date tax disc are clamped and served with a notice that unless the owner pays up the car will be towed away by the DVLA.
