A man was arrested on Chester Cathedral grounds following a suspicion of assault.

Yesterday (Wednesday, October 12) around 9pm police were called to Princess Street following reports of an altercation between five men.

When police arrived at the scene, two men fled, running through the grounds of the Chester Cathedral before being stopped.

A 34 year old man was released from custody without charge.

A second man, 29, from Chester remains in custody.

Poppy Roberts, 19, a student at the University of Chester, witnessed the incident.

She said: “I was out for my 9pm run on the walls with my friend, when all of a sudden a police officer with a dog told me to stand back in case his dog became aggressive.

“My friend and I stood back to let the officer and his dog pass when we saw the commotion. We heard a struggle and saw what seemed like a taser.”

She added: “It makes me feel good the way the police handled the whole ordeal. However, I had no idea this type of activity happened so close to my doorstep.”
