A RIGHT minded member of the public made a citizen’s arrest of a child after a housing development was deliberately set on fire in Saltney last night.
Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to a fire at the Anywl Homes development on Boundary Lane, Saltney, on the Flintshire and Chester border at about 6pm on Wednesday night believing that children were still trapped inside the burning building.
Fire fighter Andy Boyle said: “We were called to a building on fire with children trapped inside and made all haste to that.
“When we arrived there will people running in all directions and we could sire fire in the windows so we sent in two officers with breathing apparatus.”
While the officers were investigating the building a mystery member of the public made the fire service aware that everyone had fled the building and that they had made a citizen’s arrest of one of the children.
“We made our way to the top floor of the development where we found rolls of insulation and flooring which the builders had left on fire,” added fire fighter Boyle.
“It was definitely a malicious fire by the children.
“We extinguished the flames with high pressure hoses, there was no damage to the building itself.
“The whole place was fenced up for a reason. Children should stay clear of building sites, there could be combustible materials there, they could be trapped and it’s always going to cause a lot of damage.
“The children could have done themselves a lot of damage.
“We give our thanks to the member of the public.”
