CHESHIRE West and Chester Council has organised 14 events as part of a campaign to promote National Eye Health Week and AgeUK Falls Awareness Week between June 20 and 24.

Vision Support, AgeUK, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, local opticians and staff across health and social care are also running events to raise the importance of having eyes checked and sight tested in a bid to reduce falls for older people.

Every year, around one in three people over 65, and one in two people aged over 85 living in the community will have a fall.

Mark Palethorpe, the council’s director of adult social care and health, said: “Any fall will shake your confidence even for a short while. It can make you anxious about falling again and make you wary of going about your daily activities.”

The council events are taking place between June 20-24 from 11am-1pm at the Independent Living Centres in New Grosvenor Road, Ellesmere Port (0151 337 6399) and Hartford Business Centre (01606 881980).
