A MAGICAL lantern parade full of Christmas cheer will light up Ellesmere Port's Whitby Park.

Schoolchildren throughout the borough took part in a series of workshops, where they learned how to make paper lanterns, which they'll carry in a spectacular parade through the park.

Last year more than 150 people paraded around Whitby Park and joined in Christmas carols.

This year the Whitby Winter Wonderland parade will be led by Makka Sutu, a local samba band.

Large arches have been made to help the samba band guide the way as the parade snakes through the park, with one or two surprises along the way.

As well as singing traditional Christmas carols, people will also have the chance to sing festive pop songs such as Rocking Around The Christmas Tree, Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow and Winter Wonderland.

The event will be held on Friday, December 17, starting at 6pm at the park's performance area.

Mulled wine, horse chestnuts, and other Christmas-related refreshments will be available.

Borough council arts officer and event organiser Samantha Lee said: 'Judging from last years event, and with the added improvements, this event will be a fun night out for all the family.

'I encourage as many people as possible to come along with their own torches and lanterns.

'Song books will be given out for everybody to sing along, the atmosphere will be really festive and it is sure to get you in the mood for Christmas.'
