CHILDREN in Helsby have been given vital first aid training.

Students at Helsby High School were given vital life-saving tips during special first aid demonstrations by team members from St John Ambulance Cheshire.

The 20 teenagers were taught how to stop casualties bleeding, chest pain and choking all skills which the team say could help prevent injuries and even death both in and out of school.

Steve Peaurt, CEO of St John Ambulance, said that learning first aid was a vital skill which could mean the difference between life and death in everyday circumstances.

“Learning first aid is one of the single most important things you can do in your life,” said Steve.

“You never know when you might need it – at work, at home, in school, playing sport – you just don’t know.

“With basic first aid skills, anyone can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved and what could be more important than saving someone’s life?”

The demonstrations were part of Save a Life September a new scheme by St John Ambulance which aims to give as many people as possible vital first aid skills.

Children at the school will also be taking part in a young first aider course designed to give children aged between 6-16-years-old vital life-saving skills in the classroom as part of the national curriculum.

Helsby High School teacher Joanne Robinson said: “We were so impressed with the demos given by the team that we have decided to give our Year 10 children the opportunity to acquire further first aid skills and do their young first aider course.”
