Former King’s School student Joe Crilly is odds on to be a winner during the World Cup. In this special report, the 23-year-old cashier, from the Frodsham Street William Hill branch, talks about landing the role of press assistant at Greenside House in London to learn the trade and help formulate betting markets

I AM sure that a number of you have made your predictions for the World Cup. I am also sure that many of you have put your money where your mouth is and placed your bet on Spain to lift the trophy or Wayne Rooney to bag the golden boot at your local bookmakers.

But did you know that you can also back Stephen Gerrard and Alex Curran to be the first World Cup break-up at 2/1, or Christine Bleakley to celebrate England winning the World Cup by running onto the pitch in Cape Town with vuvuzela in hand at 100/1? These are the kind of “fun” markets that the PR team at William Hill devise to widen the profile of the company.

It is all about finding different angles.

Punters can even come up with their own bets: Richard Enticott, an Englishman who currently lives in New York, will win £1m from William Hill if his unborn son grows up to score a goal for England during the 2030 World Cup Finals after staking £100 at 10,000/1 about this happening.

Not all bets are accepted, for example, one man wanted to bet that he could saw off his own leg and survive. Graham Sharpe the head of PR for William Hill wrote back: “If we accepted this bet there would be two of us without a leg to stand on – in your case an actual one, and in ours a moral one.”
