The baby Asian elephant born at Chester Zoo yesterday (August 20) has been named Nandita.

The female calf, born to mum Thi Hi Way at 2.38pm shares her name with the zoo's Assam conservation project leader Nandita Hazarika, who is working to protect Asian elephants in India as part of the Assam Haathi Project.

The female youngster was on her feet within three minutes of being born was welcomed into the group by mum Thi Hi Way and four other members of the zoo’s Hi Way family of elephants.

Keepers at the zoo say Thi, 34, delivered her latest offspring ‘very smoothly’ following a 22-month gestation.
