Just eight months after holding their first ever rehearsal, the new Chester Youth Symphony Orchestra has given its first performance which has been hailed as a great success.

The orchestra was performing at the invitation of the Cheshire West Voluntary Arts Network at their first ever awards evening held in Chester Town Hall.

The feedback from audience members was extremely positive, which included the Lord Mayor of Chester Bob Rudd and many important people from the arts scene in and around Chester, not forgetting the proud families and friends of the players.

Included in the short but varied programme was music by Purcell, Dvorak and themes from Fiddler on the Roof.

Chairman of the Voluntary Arts Network, David Woods, said: “We were delighted that the orchestra could perform at our event. It was a great performance from the players; I expected them to be good but they exceeded my expectations.

“They were really focused and well disciplined, it was great to see and hear. The feedback around the hall was really positive. I am sure the evening will have generated a number of invitations for them.”

Speaking after the concert, orchestra conductor and musical director John Modelski added: “I couldn’t have been more delighted with the way that every single musician played. The feedback we have had from audience members has been amazing. I am so proud of them and pleased to have been a part of such a prestigious event.

“It’s a perfect start to our aim of making this orchestra one of the top musical ensembles in the Chester area.”

It is the plan to grow the orchestra year on year and applications are welcome at any time throughout the year. nterested applicants are welcome to come along to a free “taster” rehearsal to try the orchestra out prior to applying.

Rehearsals, held in The Queen’s School, Chester on Friday evening in term-time, are always fun and informal, but ensuring a high standard of professionalism and ensuring every player reaches their full potential.

Applicants must be 21 or under, around Grade 5 level (although this is only an indication; there is no need to have actually taken any exams) and from any geographical location. More information can be found at www.cyso.org.uk .
