YOUNG musicians from the North West have hit the high notes in a Chester competition.

Tom Blomfield, 17, of Lloc, won Chester Music Society’s Young Musicians of the Year competition at The King’s School.

Oboeist Tom was one of 13 young performers who took part in the closely fought competition, which he won accomplished performances of works by Telemann, Vaughan Williams and Mozart.

Adjudicator Kelvin Leslie said of Tom’s playing of a Mozart Rondo: “There was some delightful playing here. The character and style of the music was cheerfully conveyed, with meticulous attention to detail.”

The winner of the vocal section was Faye Anglesea, 23, of Drury in Flintshire. She sang songs by Fauré, an aria from Faust and Can’t Help Lovin’ that Man from Showboat. Runner-up was 16-year-old baritone Nicholas Bradley, a pupil of Abbey Gate College.

The two winners will each receive a cash prize and trophy, together with the opportunity to perform, alongside the runners up, in a concert in St Mary’s Centre, Chester on January 30, 2013.

The winners and runners up will also be able to apply for two bursaries, each of £500, which Chester Music Society is offering to applicants who wish to further their musical education.
