A CITY centre crime-busting scheme has been so successful in Chester it has been extended.

The Chester Against Business Crime scheme started two years ago and has led to the launch of Ellesmere Port Against Business Crime.

Member businesses have radios to allow contact with CCTV operators, police and each other to share information about thieves operating in the area and they have weekly meetings with police and community support officers.

Convicted offenders can be banned from stores if they have been cautioned or convicted of a similar crime in the past year. The orders normally remain in force for one year from the date of issue.

Chester Against Business Crime manager Bob Lelliott said: “Before the scheme was implemented in Chester, shoplifting was estimated to cost the city up to an astonishing £20 million per year.

“This figure has been reduced by 22% - but there are still a number of smaller businesses which are having to cope with massive losses of up to £1,500 a week.”
