CHESTER Theatre Club is about to unveil the first production of its 50th anniversary season.

She Stoops To Conquer by Oliver Goldsmith is an hilarious comedy directed by one of the club’s most experienced and respected directors, Jane Barth.

It features amateur actors from all walks of life, from university lecturers to vets, and even a boxer.

She Stoops To Conquer is a farcical domestic romp concerning the fortunes of two young bucks and a collection of country gentry and bumpkins.

The main character is Marlow, an over-educated gentleman who is shy in the presence of young ladies. Marlowe is on his way to meet a potential wife to be, accompanied by his more confident friend Hastings.

However, on their journey to the Hardcastle’s country pile, they meet Tom Lumpkin, a bit of a lad with a penchant for practical jokes.

He manages to convince Marlow and Hastings that the country house for which they are headed is not the home of Marlow’s potential in-laws, but the local inn.

Director Jane Barth said: “Our production aims to bring out all the humour and jokes of this warm, funny comedy.”

There is a preview at the Little Theatre in Gloucester Street, Newtown, at 7.30pm on Saturday, September 17 (tickets £6.50). The play then runs from September 19-24.

All tickets can be purchased by calling 01244 322674.

Since 1944, Chester Little Theatre has generally staged five or six full-length plays each year, and currently own the city’s only fully operational theatre space.

With a fine tradition of costume drama, including the award-winning Hay Fever, they are proud to boast a raked auditorium seating 126 people, an adaptable stage with full technical facilities, and a large wardrobe of costumes from all periods.
