FIVE schools in Chester have held a Fairtrade Friday which included assemblies, cake making and selling, holding a community coffee morning, food tasting and a whole host of curricular linked activities within the classroom.

Those who took part were Acresfield Primary School, Newton Primary School, Saughall All Saints CE Primary School, St Oswald’s CE Aided Primary School and Upton Heath CE Primary School.

The schools are working together to share good practice and they are all aiming to achieve Fairtrade School Status by the end of the academic year.

Cheshire West and Chester was awarded Fairtrade Borough Status this summer, due in part to the activities of more than 100 schools and educational establishments within the area.

Status needs to be renewed every two years and these Fairtrade Friday events will help the borough to retain this award.

Fairtrade member champion Cllr Julia Tickridge said: “I think Fairtrade Friday is a great initiative within Cheshire West and Chester schools and will do much to promote Fairtrade products and raise awareness of Fairtrade values and principles amongst pupils, staff and parents across the borough.”

St Oswald’s Primary School headteacher Pip Rowe said: “As headteacher of St Oswald’s, it is a vital part of my role to ensure that we are developing our children as responsible citizens of tomorrow.”
