An elderly couple were taken to hospital by ambulance following a collision which caused chaos on the A55 near Chester.

The man and wife, aged 82 and 80 respectively, had to be cut out of their Suzuki Swift on the North Wales-bound carriageway of the Southerly Bypass near Vicars Cross in Chester.

Air bags in the Suzuki deployed in the accident, which happened about 1.50pm today (Friday, June 13) and also involved two other saloon cars, a flat back truck, Renault van and a Polish HGV.

Both sides of the carriageway were closed to allow the air ambulance to land although the on board heli-med doctor assessed the elderly gentleman and deemed him fit to travel by road ambulance. There had been concern because the casualty had a medical history involving heart complaints. His wife also went to hospital. There were no other injuries.

The A55 has now been reopened but the incident has caused huge congestion in both directions.
