A convicted child rapist has had his sentence increased by two years but will potentially serve less time in prison.

Ramsey Ramsey, 79, of Grange Road, Chester, was found guilty unanimously of 36 historical child sex offences by a jury at Chester Crown Court last week and sentenced by Judge John Benson QC to 14 years in prison, of which he was told he would have to serve at least two-thirds - nine years and three months.

But the pensioner was re-sentenced to 16 years yesterday (August 28) and told he must serve eight years before he is eligible for release, after the prosecution pointed out that they had given Judge John Benson QC the wrong sentencing guidelines originally.

Ramsey was convicted of 16 counts of rape, 11 counts of indecent assault, three counts of indecency with a child, three counts of taking indecent images of children and three counts of procuration of a female under the age of 21, following a 12-day trial.

Between 1987 and 2000, Ramsey groomed and sexually abused five underage girls at a flat in Southport and locations around Chester including the Bombay Palace restaurant on Upper Northgate Street (where he worked front of house for many years), his Grange Road home and the basement car park of the Northgate Arena.
