There were splashing scenes on the River Dee for the annual Chester Raft Race.

Huge crowds gathered on the banks and bridges of the Dee to get a glimpse of the spectacle on Sunday (July 10).

Valiant sailors donned their life jackets and tried their best to avoid a cold dunking if they capsized. The weather stayed dry for those who managed to keep upright.

It was all organised by the Rotary Club of Chester in aid of the Hospice of the Good Shepherd.

Prior to the race, Rotary Club president elect Brendan Witter had said he expected to see plenty of imaginative designs, with this year’s theme of transport through the ages.

He was not let down as teams turned out in force with their creative vessels.

Among them were a Back to the Future-inspired Delorean, a Roman-themed ship and fly-board champion Jay St John, who used his jets to soak the competition throughout.

Prizes were handed out to the winners including teams from Chester Auto Services and SP Energy Networks.
