RACING made a welcome return to Chester yesterday as the traditional May meeting at the Roodee got under way.

Grey skies and persistent rain failed to dampen spirits of racegoers who flocked to the course for Chester Cup day.

Among the famous faces joining them were members of the Manchester United football team including Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves.

Also with them was racing afficionado Michael Owen who suffered the unhappy sight of his own horse, Nemo Spirit, coming last in the big race which was won by Mamlook.

The May meeting at Chester Racecourse continues today and Friday.
