HIGHFIELD school children are hungry to learn.

The Blacon youngsters spent the day at Chester Racecourse, learning about food and catering, as part of a food education programme.

Chefs Adopt a School encourages children to be passionate about food and learn about hygiene and cooking.

Highfield is one of the first schools in the North West to take part in the programme which is funded by the Northwest Development Agency.

Teaching assistant Jackie Holden said: “We had a great day at the racecourse.

“We had tasting sessions and then a guided tour of the kitchens and were taught how they manage the catering on race days.

“We then went on to the prestigious 1539 restaurant and looked at live lobsters.”

Brian Turner CBE, president of the Academy of Culinary Arts which runs the programme, said: “We awaken in children an interest in food that will stay with them for life”
