CHESTER Race Company has demolished its former stables at Linenhall after problems with vagrants living in the structures.

The move came after Elan Homes, formed by the former senior management team of David McLean Homes, decided not to take up its option to build apartments on the site, which expired in March.

Chief executive Richard Thomas said: “When the McLean option lapsed we sought permission to demolish it from the city council.

“It wasn’t ideal having all those buildings and there were vagrants living in there. We spoke to the neighbours and The Queen’s School and the best time to carry out the work was during the Easter period while the Queen’s School were off because we didn’t want to make any noise.

“We got it down in two weeks.”

Mr Thomas said the site would remain in the current state until it was developed for housing. He did not expect any interest in the current climate and said the Race Company would not realise a good price for the plot at the moment.

He said the site was “clean and tidy” and there was no danger to anybody. There are plans to open a pedestrian route through the middle of it to act as a short-cut and to ensure a civilising influence by the law-abiding majority. Bollards would be erected to deny vehicular access.

Mr Thomas is busy getting ready for the three-day May festival (May 6-8).
