A rapist who preyed on a vulnerable victim in a portable toilet in Chester had a contemptuous 'attitude' towards British women.
Ionut Buruiana, of Wharton Court, Chester, followed a woman into a cubicle and ignored her repeated cries of ‘No’ as he carried out his attack.
The 27-year-old was jailed for 11 years after being found guilty by majority verdict at Warrington Crown Court on Friday (August 19).
After his arrest on the night of the incident (Sunday, March 13), Buruiana told police: “Here in the UK girls will go out to a club, have a drink and have sex within five minutes of talking to a stranger.”
Judge Tina Landale said: “You were loitering on a street in Chester looking for a drunk woman to have sex with.
“I have no doubt that was what you were planning to do because of your attitude to women, which was revealed in your interview.
“The CCTV footage shows you followed your victim constantly looking over your shoulder. She was clearly vulnerable and you preyed on her in that state.”
The predator was only caught after a brave group of friends heard the woman’s cries for help and intervened.
Matthew Corbett-Jones, prosecuting, read out an impact statement on behalf of the victim.
She said: “I’ve been degraded and attacked by a total stranger, made to feel that just because I had a drink I put myself in danger.
“I was scared he could have given me a sexually transmitted disease.
“I need to know he is in prison. I hate the thought he has done anything to anyone else.
“I can’t go out as much anymore. My daughter will suffer because I won’t let her do anything anymore. I’m so frightened something will happen to her.
“At the moment I can just barely get by without seeing any reminders of that night.”
Buruiana, who is married with a child, is originally from Romania. He came to the UK last October and had been working as a solar panel fitter in Deeside.
He followed his victim and her friend along Eastgate and Foregate Streets after they had passed by him following a night out in the city.
The rapist then struck as she separated from her friend and went to use the portable toilet, which was outside the Disney store.
During his assault he refused his victim’s cries of ‘No’ and told her to ‘Take that b****’, which Judge Landale said was another indicator of his attitude to women.
A group of friends were able to intervene to save her, call the police and hold Buruiana there until police arrived.
On arrest officers concluded he was drunk, his speech slurred and eyes glazed over. He had claimed the sexual activity between them in the toilet was consensual.
The 27-year-old buried his head in his hands after the guilty verdict was announced.
